Lead Footwear Propulsion Engineer

Posted on January 16, 2026 by Funmi Iyanda Abeba

Kenny “Moonshoes” DeLuca — Lead Footwear Propulsion Engineer (Barbie Boot Division)

Role: Designer of Barbie’s gravity-defying, emotionally responsive, rhinestone-encrusted space boots
*Byline: Mitzi Buttonwell, Space Cowgirl Gazette

“You can’t put Barbie on Mars with flat soles. That’d be cinematic malpractice.”

Kenny “Moonshoes” DeLuca, 37, leans over a glitter-smudged blueprint in his workshop, which smells faintly of ozone, latex adhesive, and success. The boots he designed for Barbie 2: Mars Mission do more than shimmer — they perform ballet in low gravity, respond to Barbie’s emotional state, and are certified by NASA for theatrical liftoff.

How It All Began

Kenny started in footwear by hacking Heelys in high school. He once modified a pair of Crocs to contain rocket fuel.

“My guidance counselor told me it was a waste of talent. Now I make $200K and my boots weep glitter when Barbie’s sad.”

Designing Barbie’s Interstellar Kicks

Each pair of Barbie’s space boots contains:

  • Micro-thrusters for bounce control

  • An empathy chip to glow based on Barbie’s mood

  • Crystalized LED soles that display inspirational quotes mid-leap

“Scene 19? She jumps off a cliff to save Ken’s self-esteem. Her boots lit up with ‘You Are Enough.’ That was me.”

The “Moonshoes Protocol”

To prevent injury during scenes filmed at half gravity, DeLuca instituted a unique testing regimen:

  • He launched 12 prototype boots off a trampoline cannon in downtown Wichita Falls

  • Hired retired cheerleaders to test landings into ball pits

  • Partnered with the Texas Tech Physics Department for “sass trajectory modeling”

Barbie’s Emotional Heel Calibration System™

The boots don’t just float — they feel.

  • Red: Confident

  • Blue: Doubtful

  • Gold: Existential breakthrough

  • Pink: Default Empowerment Mode™

  • Strobing rainbow: Preparing a monologue

The system is powered by Barbie’s vocal pitch, oxygen levels, and proximity to injustice.

Ken’s Boots? Not Quite

“Ryan Gosling asked for boots with ankle flares. I gave him orthopedic insoles. That’s the hierarchy.”

Ken’s boots squeak when he tells a lie.

“That was unintentional, but we left it in. It added stakes.”

Wichita Falls: Boot Capital of Barbieverse

Kenny set up a workshop in a former tractor supply store. Locals helped fabricate:

  • 48 boot pairs

  • 1 set of levitating kitten heels for Barbie’s disguise scene

  • 3 boot-styled flamethrowers

He employed:

  • 6 teen welders

  • 4 seamstresses from the county fair costume committee

  • 1 local guy named Earl who only talks in boot idioms

“If the heel don’t fit, redesign it.” — Earl

The Great Boot Explosion

During test filming, one early pair misfired, launching itself into a Baptist church parking lot during a wedding. The bride took it as a sign and changed her life path.

“She’s now a geologist. Boots do that to people.”

OSHA, FAA, and the Vatican

Due to the boots’ propulsion capacity, Kenny had to file permits with:

  • OSHA (Occupational Sparkle Hazard Authorization)

  • FAA (due to low-altitude takeoffs)

  • The Vatican (unclear boot-related miracle claims from a local nun)

The Emotional Toll

“I cried when I saw Barbie do a triple-flip heel stomp onto a Martian flag and declare Earth’s right to self-love.”

His wife, Jolene, calls the boots his “second marriage.”

“We had counseling. The boots were present.”

Future Ventures

Kenny is launching his own line:
“Kicks of Justice™” — empowering footwear for:

  • Social workers

  • Single moms

  • Substitute teachers in underfunded districts

And a luxury line for pets:
“Pawsi-Traction.” For confident canines.

What Locals Say

“My niece made boot tassels for Barbie and now she’s president of her middle school.” — Carla, diner waitress

“I helped install the glitter exhaust vents. I believe in something now.” — Joe R., ex-felon turned sparkle technician

Final Words

“I didn’t build Barbie’s boots to make her look good. I built them so she could liberate a planet without sacrificing ankle stability.”
