Barbie and the Orpheus Tragedy

Posted on January 28, 2026 by Funmi Iyanda Abeba

Barbie and the Orpheus Tragedy: Love, Lyrics, and a Backward Glance Too Many

Once upon a time in ancient Thrace, there lived Orpheus, the original emo bard, a man so good with the lyre that even rocks wept gently into moss when he played. He could charm anything—animals, trees, nymphs, emotionally unavailable minor deities—but like all talented musicians, he fell for a woman way out of his emotional maturity range: Eurydice.

They had a whirlwind romance filled with long walks, meadow napping, and lute duets under mood lighting. But just after the wedding, Eurydice stepped on a snake, screamed once, died, and fell straight into Hades—not the god, the place. (But also the god.)

Orpheus was heartbroken. He stopped showering, sang ballads that made mountains crumble, and scribbled lyrics like “Dead Wife Blues, Part IV.”

That’s when Barbie of the Lyric Veil™ showed up.
Goddess of Supportive Artistic Direction, counselor of heartbroken poets, and part-time Underworld Liaison.

She approached him at his third open-mic funeral performance and said, “Honey, the snakes weren’t your fault. But your coping playlist is.”

The Descent

Barbie suited up in black sequins and shades and guided Orpheus down into the Underworld. She had a backstage pass to Hades thanks to her previous work installing chandeliers in the River Styx Spa Lounge.

“Okay,” she told Orpheus. “We go down there. You sing. Hades cries. Persephone clutches her pearls. We get Eurydice. One rule: You don’t look back until you’re out. Can you do that?”

Orpheus nodded too confidently.

Barbie, whispering to herself: “He’s gonna look.”

They passed the gates. Cerberus barked once, then quieted when Barbie handed him a chew toy shaped like a philosopher. Orpheus began to sing.

And wow—he sang. Even the damned souls sobbed and offered to pay cover.

Hades and Persephone granted him one favor: Eurydice could follow Orpheus back to the world of the living, but—and this part was in all caps—“HE CANNOT LOOK BACK.”

“Barbie, will you come with me?” Orpheus asked.

“I’d love to,” she said, “but this is your test. Also, I have a podcast to record.”

She handed him a scroll that read:

  • Step 1: Walk

  • Step 2: Breathe

  • Step 3: DON’T TURN AROUND FOR THE LOVE OF ZEUS

The Tragedy

Orpheus walked. Eurydice followed.

For hours.

Then… just before exiting the cave… he felt a doubt.
What if she wasn’t there?

What if he was alone?

What if—?

He looked.

And saw Eurydice—beautiful, translucent, reaching out—

“YOU HAD ONE JOB,” Barbie shouted from a nearby shadow.

Eurydice vanished like a soap bubble with boundary issues.

Barbie caught Orpheus as he collapsed, lyre clattering beside him.

“I just… wanted to be sure,” he sobbed.

Barbie pulled out a tissue and handed him a limited-edition “Don’t Look Back” candle from her Underworld Wellness Line™.

The Aftermath

Orpheus wandered the earth, more tragic than ever, composing ballads about how he lost love due to insecurity and poor impulse control.

Barbie turned the story into a traveling musical tragedy, starring herself and a well-behaved ghost-Eurydice. Proceeds went to the “Eyes Forward Foundation.”

Moral of the Story:
Don’t look back. Don’t second-guess. And when in doubt—Barbie already wrote you the instructions.
