Barbie 2 Head of Hair — Wind Wrangler

Posted on August 29, 2026 by Funmi Iyanda Abeba

Araceli Mendez – Head of Hair, Wind Wrangler & Curl Philosopher

Byline: Teena Larrabee, Style Correspondent for Follicle Frontier

Inside a pink trailer retrofitted with both salon chairs and weather maps, Araceli Mendez hums along to 90s Tejano music while brushing synthetic dust from a platinum-blonde wig labeled “Martian Barbie – Scene 24: Existential Revelation & Perm.” Outside, tumbleweeds pirouette past like backup dancers.

“You try holding a blowout in a Wichita Falls crosswind. Barbie’s bangs were vertical.”

As the Head of Hair and Texture Tone Supervisor on Barbie 2: Mars Mission, Mendez had one mission: to help Barbie’s hair speak the truth—even in a dust storm.

Hair as a Narrative Tool

“In this film, Barbie’s hair isn’t decoration—it’s storytelling. Her arc is in her part.”

When Barbie returns to Wichita Falls to “rediscover her roots,” her hair shifts from galactic silver to “Lowes parking lot brunette.” Araceli pushed for authenticity.

“We gave her real human-hair split ends. It tested well with our emotionally-available focus group.”

Barbie’s curls frizz with self-doubt. Ken’s side part is eventually lost during a line-dancing bender. Every follicle matters.

Wind: The Uncredited Villain

“Wind broke four of my interns,” Araceli says, sipping lemon water through a glittery straw. “One girl ran off into a storm chasing a rogue braid extension.”

The production spent $48,000 on anti-frizz protocols. Mendez installed a humidity tent, laced wigs with tiny sandbags, and designed Barbie’s final Act III ponytail to surrender to nature.

“It was a metaphor,” she whispers. “The ponytail droops. So does her emotional armor.”

Local Influence

Barbie’s Texas transformation required Araceli to study Wichita Falls hairstyles. She spent hours observing salon patrons at Curl Up & Dye and The Hairport.

“I heard a woman say, ‘Big hair hides big feelings.’ That became our design brief.”

Ken’s sideburns were shaped using photographs of 1970s Midwestern roller-rink attendants. “We wanted a man who looked like he tried,” she explains.

Notable Moments

  • Scene 12: Barbie’s wig flies off during an actual wind gust and lands on a squirrel. That footage is now canon.

  • Scene 35: Barbie brushes her hair in front of a mirror for 11 minutes. “It’s our 2001: A Space Odyssey moment,” Araceli says.

  • Scene 58: Barbie ties her hair into a braid using dental floss during a Mars rationing emergency. “It’s survival couture.”

Hair Talk With the Stars

Margot Robbie once asked, “What does a split end mean to Barbie?” Araceli replied, “It means she’s lived.”

Ryan Gosling attempted a “dust perm” but abandoned it after allergic reaction to Martian clay.

America Ferrera refused extensions. “She wanted real roots—like the kind you dye over after two breakups and a tax audit,” Araceli notes proudly.

Hair in the Trailer

The trailer stores over 97 wigs, 400 hairpins, and three emergency kits labeled:

  • “Ken Panic Frizz”

  • “Barbie: Existential Bob”

  • “Texas Tornado Glam”

Final Reflections

“Barbie’s hair is her journey. We start with perfection and end with honesty. That’s not a makeover. That’s a reckoning.”

Araceli zips a travel case labeled “Barbie’s Truth Bangs” and smiles.

“I don’t care what the critics say. That girl’s ponytail wept. And that’s cinema.”
