Gilgamesh and Barbie

Posted on January 29, 2026 by Funmi Iyanda Abeba

The Epic of Gilgamesh and Barbie: The Pink Cuneiform Chronicles

In the mighty city of Uruk, where the ziggurats were high and the egos higher, Gilgamesh, two-thirds god and one-third problematic man bun, ruled with abs of bronze and the sensitivity of a damp brick. The citizens of Uruk, desperate for relief from his CrossFit contests and unsolicited poetry readings, did what any reasonable ancient Mesopotamian would do: they prayed for help.

And help came. Not from the gods, but from Mattel.

Descending from the heavens in a glittery chariot drawn by two flamingo-pink lions, arrived Barbie of Malibu, also known as Barbianna, the Dreamhouse Wanderer. She had mastered every trade: fashion designer, astronaut, CEO, and now—divine emissary to balance Gilgamesh’s hypermasculine chaos with pastel diplomacy and collagen-based wisdom.

“Who dares wear heels in the Euphrates mud?” Gilgamesh scoffed.

“Someone who doesn’t need to compensate with a 40-cubit tall wall,” Barbie said, adjusting her crown made from the finest gold-plated hairbrushes of Kish.

Gilgamesh was stunned. No one had ever dared sass him while applying lip gloss.

Meanwhile, the gods were busy too. They created Enkidu, a wild man raised by animals, basically Mesopotamian Tarzan with a beard made of moss. Barbie, realizing Uruk needed more than biceps and bronzer, civilizes Enkidu—not with beer and sex (as in the original tale)—but with a Dream Spa Experience and a crash course in Personal Branding.

“You can’t change the world until you moisturize,” she whispered, massaging Enkidu’s calloused hands with apricot scrub.

Together, Barbie, Enkidu, and Gilgamesh set off on epic quests. First stop: slaying Humbaba, the forest demon. When Humbaba tried to threaten them with his 17 mouths and bad Yelp reviews, Barbie stood firm.

“I’ve faced worse in a boardroom with Ken and 14 unlicensed Bratz,” she said, drawing her pink plasma sword. “Let’s do this.”

They did slay Humbaba, but Barbie suggested they do it sustainably and with compassion, which confused everyone. She later hosted a grief circle for the cedar trees.

But tragedy loomed. Enkidu, suffering from a divine curse for his role in the Humbaba affair, fell ill. As he lay dying, Barbie held his hand and whispered lullabies from her “Desert Power Ballads Vol. 1” cassette.

Gilgamesh, devastated, went on a journey to find immortality. Barbie, ever supportive, tagged along—filming the journey for an ancient Sumerian reality show called “Keeping Up with the Demi-Gods.”

They sought Utnapishtim, survivor of the Great Flood, who lived in a houseboat filled with immortal goats. He offered Gilgamesh the secret of eternal life—a magical plant that grew at the bottom of the ocean. Gilgamesh dove in, grabbed the plant, but left it unattended while doing shirtless yoga. A serpent slithered up and stole it.

Barbie, sipping date wine on the shore, shook her head. “You had one job.”

In the end, Gilgamesh returned to Uruk, wiser but still slightly annoying. He carved his story into stone—with Barbie’s co-author credit proudly etched below.

Moral of the story: You can slay monsters, search for eternal life, and mourn a friend—but never underestimate the power of a good companion with a DreamCamper and a Ph.D. in Emotional Intelligence.
