Barbie’s Descent Into the Underworld: Lip Gloss in the Land of the Dead
Once upon a Sumerian century, Barbie of Babylonia, goddess of love, war, makeup tutorials, and limited-edition handbags, decided—rather impulsively—to visit the Underworld. Why? Because her goth sister Ereshkigal (a.k.a. Queen of the Dead and winner of “Most Likely to Sulk Eternally” in god school) hadn’t returned her favorite sequined trench coat.
Also, Barbie was bored.
“It’s not just a trench coat,” she told Ken, who was busy inventing abs. “It represents divine duality and the emotional labor of sisterhood.”
So, naturally, she packed seven outfits for her descent—one for each Gate of the Underworld, plus a backup “just in case I run into a death demon with taste.”

At Gate 1, the gatekeeper said, “To pass, you must remove your crown.”
Barbie blinked. “Honey, this isn’t just a crown. It’s a Swarovski-studded metaphor.”
Still, she handed it over. She was committed to the bit.
Gate 2: “Remove your earrings.”
“They were forged in the fires of Venus by twelve artisan mermaids.”
Gone.
Gate 3: “Necklace.”
“Cultural symbol of love and neck symmetry.”
Gone.
By Gate 7, Barbie was fully naked—metaphorically, emotionally, and also literally, which really made her rethink the decision to wear six-inch gladiator heels.
“Why are these gates so obsessed with stripping women of their power?” she muttered.
When she finally entered the throne room of the Underworld, Ereshkigal was on her obsidian chaise lounge, sipping expired wine coolers and scrolling ancient MySpace profiles.
“Barbie,” she growled, “Why are you here?”
“To talk,” Barbie said. “And to get my coat.”
“You dared enter my realm for outerwear?”
“It’s reversible!”
Without warning, Ereshkigal shrieked, turned into a flaming bat shadow, and had Barbie killed on the spot.
Yep. Just straight up dead. Death by sibling drama.
Barbie’s perfect body was hung on a meat hook, and the Underworld sighed in aesthetic relief.
But up on Earth, all was not well. Without Barbie, plants wilted, influencers cried, and romantic comedies were canceled. No love. No fashion. No brunch.
The gods panicked and sent Ken to fix it.
Ken, dressed in ceremonial cargo shorts, begged Ereshkigal for Barbie’s release. She refused. So the gods tricked her with a pair of emotionally intelligent spirit beings who performed grief-based improv therapy until she sobbed uncontrollably and screamed, “TAKE HER BACK! I’M TIRED OF HER GLITTER AURA!”
Barbie was revived—but with a catch: someone else had to take her place in the Underworld.
When she returned topside, her ex, Dumuzi, was lounging in her pink chaise with a mimosa, acting like he hadn’t just ghosted her for 6 months.
“Barbie! You’re back! I thought you were dead, so I started a smoothie business.”
“Cool,” Barbie said. “Enjoy running it… from HELL.”
She had him dragged off as her replacement.
Moral of the Story: Don’t mess with Barbie. She’ll march into Hell, reclaim her power, and still look flawless after being nailed to a meat hook. Sisterhood is complicated—but fashion is eternal.
