Sound Designer

Flinton “Flip” DeMarco — Sound Designer, Martian Terrain Foley Artist

Role: Heels-on-Mars Sound Specialist, Cosmic Echo Curator, Boots v. Sand Analyzer
*Byline: Cressida Knotley, Audio Cinephile Monthly

“If you can’t hear Barbie’s heel pierce the Martian crust with divine confidence, have you even made cinema?”

Meet Flinton “Flip” DeMarco, 42, a veteran sound designer whose claim to fame was creating the original lightsaber hum for a Shark Tank parody. But nothing prepared him for the sonic demands of Barbie 2: Mars Mission, where the audio had to be both scientifically believable and emotionally impractical.

“This isn’t just about footsteps. It’s about footsteps that heal the feminine soul while repelling Martian patriarchy.”

Designing the Barbie Soundscape

Flip’s primary job: engineer the impossible sound of Barbie’s pink stilettos on Martian gravel — a terrain that does not exist, at least not in Wichita Falls. To simulate it, he tested combinations of:

  • Sugar crystals over fine cat litter

  • Rose quartz chips poured onto velvet

  • Shattered gender roles layered over oat milk froth

“It took 123 versions to get the perfect ‘crunch-twinkle.’ We called it the EmpowerStep™.”

Martian Atmosphere: Not a Vacuum, But a Vibe

Unlike other sci-fi films, Barbie 2 refused to use silence in space. Flip was ordered to “fill every void with emotional resonance.” This meant:

  • Recording wind chimes during a book club fight

  • Blending the sound of yawning horses and harp glissandos for Ken’s breakdown

  • Capturing the subtle crackle of a dream being compromised by realism

“If Nolan had hired me, Interstellar would’ve had more tiara sparkle reverb.”

Wichita Falls Makes Noise

Flip praises Wichita Falls for being “sonically brave.” Key locations included:

  • The Waterfall at Lucy Park, which he sampled and reversed to sound like Barbie crying backwards

  • A roller rink, where the echo of high school regret became the base tone for Martian radios

  • A church gymnasium, whose acoustics helped simulate the emptiness of Ken’s locker room monologue

“I had 17 locals stomp in glitter boots across a basketball court while reciting empowering quotes. That was our villain’s footsteps.”

Barbie’s Voice: Engineered Empowerment

Margot Robbie’s voice was subtly pitched upward by 0.7% during moments of revelation, and downward by 2.1% when confronting Ken’s emotional deflections.

“When she whispers ‘I know who I am,’ we layered the sound of a thousand women nodding in therapy.”

The result? Audiences reportedly cried during test screenings, unsure why. One woman said, “I wept like I remembered my 8th-grade diary password.”

Gosling’s Emotional Echo

Ken’s breakdown scene in the Martian Sauna was a sound experiment: Flip miked a bowl of oatmeal left to think about its choices, recorded it bubbling under heat lamps, and paired it with:

  • Ryan Gosling’s sighs

  • A baritone kazoo

  • The ambient despair of a discontinued cologne

“That’s what Ken sounds like inside. Oatmeal with delusions.”

Prop Foley: Tiny Sounds with Big Feelings

Flip oversaw a team of 14 foley artists, each specializing in different themes:

  • Glitter Movement Unit: Specialized in the sound of sparkling displacement

  • Emotion-Infused Zippers: Because Barbie’s space suit zips with intention

  • Hair Toss Coordination: Required oscillating fans, wig-mounted microphones, and two ex-cheerleaders

“You don’t just hear Barbie toss her hair. You feel the gust of regained autonomy.”

The Silence That Almost Killed the Film

One pivotal scene — Barbie staring at a Martian sunrise, thinking of Gloria — was scripted in total silence. But Flip argued that silence “felt like emotional ghosting.” Instead, he added:

  • A heartbeat slowed to the rhythm of self-doubt

  • Wind recorded in a dry shampoo commercial shoot

  • A faint whisper: “It’s okay, even here”

Test audiences gasped. One man proposed to his wife during the credits.

Barbies Don’t Fart, But Ken Might

One behind-the-scenes controversy: Ken’s nervous moment during Martian battle.

“Ryan improvised a tiny sound. It was… ambiguous.”

Flip cleaned it up by mixing in the subtle rip of Velcro and the sigh of a frustrated ukulele player, ensuring it read as “vulnerable, not gastrointestinal.”

AI Tried to Replace Flip

Production considered using AI sound libraries. Flip proved his worth by designing 12 unquantifiable emotions in WAV format, including:

  • “The sound of realizing your mom was right”

  • “Jealousy in a cupcake wrapper”

  • “Hope after three mimosas and a tarot reading”

“No algorithm can replicate human feminine confusion filtered through galactic loneliness.”

Life After Barbie

Flip has since signed on to:

  • Design sound for the musical reboot of C-SPAN

  • Create custom voicemail tones for Oprah’s Book Club alumni

  • Launch his own line of therapeutic sound bath cassettes for middle-aged Barbies

He’s also touring Texas high schools giving lectures called “Noise as Identity: Your Voice Deserves Reverb.”

Final Thought

On his last day, Flip walked through the sound stage barefoot, crunched a bowl of star-shaped cereal underfoot, and whispered into his recorder:

“Even the quiet things want to be heard.”

Then he played it backward, added a whisper from a drag queen, and submitted it as the sound of Barbie’s final hug with Gloria.
