Dr. Harmony Gripton — Composer of the Martian Barbie Score & Guardian of the Intergalactic Flute
Role: Lead Composer / Soundtrack Visionary / Synth Shaman
*Byline: Peaches Morimoto, The Sound of Set
There are symphonies — and then there’s what Dr. Harmony Gripton calls a “vibrational Barbie transcendence event.” As the Lead Composer for Barbie 2: Mars Mission, Gripton didn’t just write music — she translated Barbie’s interstellar soul into a sequence of sonic waves so pink, so emotionally calibrated, that studio headphones across Wichita Falls wept glitter.
“People think composing for Barbie is about sparkles and key changes. But this film is about confronting the void… and accessorizing for it.”
Dressed in her signature cape made of recycled metronomes, Dr. Gripton takes meetings in a tent tuned to 432Hz and drinks nothing but melted harp strings steeped in rose quartz.
Origins: From Austin Coffeehouses to Martian Choirs
Dr. Gripton started her career scoring experimental sock puppet operas in Austin before being discovered by a Warner Bros. exec during an immersive performance titled “Beethoven’s Breakdown at a Gas Station.”
“He asked me, ‘Can you score space anxiety in F major?’ I said, ‘Can I feel space anxiety in B-flat?’ He wept. I got the gig.”
She composed Barbie 2’s score in a converted cotton gin outside Wichita Falls, where her team included:

================================
-
A kazoo prodigy from Holliday
-
A church organist who only plays ambient techno
-
Three goats named Melody, Minor, and Greg, who bleat in 7/8 time
The Sound of Mars: Barbie’s Sonic Identity
To capture the emotional soundscape of Barbie on Mars, Gripton used:
-
Theremins dipped in acrylic blush
-
Crystals that emit MIDI signals
-
The recorded sighs of Texas librarians looped for texture
-
A custom-made Barbie Bell Tree tuned to “the frequency of feminist reclamation”
Each character had their own “vibe suite”:
-
Barbie’s theme: Played on a Martian flute carved from a melted trophy, backed by synth whispers and the echo of a disappointed ex-boyfriend.
-
Ken’s score: Percussive, insecure, and occasionally interrupted by saxophone apologies.
-
Sydney Sweeney’s Astral Barbie: Composed in reverse, to reflect her time-loop storyline and personal denial spiral.
“We don’t score scenes. We score emotional shadows. Every Barbie has a melody. Some just haven’t heard it yet.”
Collaboration with Cast
Gripton embedded herself in rehearsal. Margot Robbie’s emotional beats were matched in real time with live didgeridoo. Gosling’s tantrums were captured and auto-tuned into a heartbreak remix now trending on TikTok.
“Sydney Sweeney cried in C minor during one take. That became our leitmotif for ‘Galactic Disappointment.’”
One on-set mishap even created the film’s defining sound: a PA tripping over a bubble machine while crying softly. Dr. Gripton layered it over a sitar.
“It became the backbone of Track 8: ‘Emotional Luggage Carousel.’”
Wichita Falls: The Soundtrack Town
Local talent made it into the score, too:
-
The Wichita Falls Water Department’s pipe hums became the ambiance of Scene 14.
-
A First Baptist youth choir recorded backing vocals for “Rise, Martian Barbie, Rise.”
-
A bus stop saxophonist named Tadpole features prominently in the love theme.
“The city hums in pink. I just transcribed it.”
The Recording Process
They built a Barbie Sound Temple out of hay bales and discarded dream car parts. Musicians had to wear sequined noise-canceling cloaks. Each recording session began with a eulogy for Earth’s male gaze and ended in interpretive dance.
The full 73-piece orchestra was led by a conductor named Dusty Finn, who refused to use a baton, opting instead for a vintage mascara wand.
“He said, ‘Real tempo comes from the lash line.’ I didn’t ask questions.”

What’s Next?

She’s also been hired to score the upcoming Barbie spinoff musical “Ken: A Man, A Plan, A Pancake.”
“Music isn’t made. It’s remembered. From before we were born. From Barbie.”
