Barbie’s Spaceship

Posted on January 7, 2026 by Funmi Iyanda Abeba

Ray “Grit” Melville — The Texan Who Drives Barbie’s Spaceship

Role: Transportation Captain / Hover-Unit Wrangler
Byline: Loretta Cain, Industrial Satire Weekly

If Barbie’s Martian DreamCruiser makes it to the final cut of Barbie 2: Mars Mission with all four pink thrusters blazing and the interior lit like a lavender nightclub in Tokyo, there’s one man to thank: Ray “Grit” Melville, the Transportation Captain from Archer City, Texas.

A 61-year-old retired rodeo mechanic with a beard that looks like it came free with a bass boat, Grit is the unlikely soul behind Barbie’s gleaming space mobility — a man who once rebuilt a combine harvester in a lightning storm, and now coordinates a fleet of glitter-wrapped hovercraft powered by solar absurdity and local welding students.

“I don’t know much about Mars or feminism,” Grit admits, “but I know how to move something from A to B, even if A is Wichita Falls and B is Beyoncé’s eyebrows.”

How He Got the Gig

Grit’s résumé isn’t your standard studio fare. After twenty years running “Melville Tractor & Transdimensional Towing,” he applied to a Craigslist ad looking for “Someone who knows vehicles and ain’t afraid of sequins.”

“They said it was for a Mars picture. I assumed it was Elon again. Didn’t know I’d be launching Barbie through a pink meteor storm.”

The producers initially interviewed Grit as a joke. But after watching him parallel park a decommissioned moon rover between two porta-potties without spilling a single iced tea, they knew he was their man.

“They called me the ‘cowboy of coordinated chaos,’” he chuckles. “That or ‘Texas Vin Diesel.’”

Bringing Barbie’s Ride to Life

Grit was in charge of overseeing all surface vehicles in Barbie 2 — including:

  • The Barbie Mars DreamCruiser (built on a Ford F-150 chassis with antigravity lift)

  • The Ken-Kart 5000, a hover-tricycle with no steering mechanism (“symbolic,” Grit says)

  • The Glambulance, a pink emergency rover with hairdryer turrets

  • The Stardust Stallion, a solar-powered mechanical unicorn

Grit coordinated with local welders, robotics clubs, two tattoo artists, and one recently paroled former NASA mechanic to get the vehicles functional and fabulous.

“I had to learn about holographic trim and vegan glitter tires. No one tells you that in shop class.”

When asked if he thought Barbie could drive the cruiser herself, Grit raised an eyebrow.

“She better. I taught her how to reverse uphill on a dune made of red Play-Doh. Margot’s a hell of a learner — like Dale Earnhardt Jr. with heels.”

The Chaos of Shooting on Texas Dirt

Filming in Wichita Falls meant real-world driving challenges: heat, dust, rattlesnakes, and invasive rodeo parades.

Grit often had to reroute the DreamCruiser around marching bands, livestock, and the occasional confused Baptist youth group.

“We were doing a chase scene when a donkey wandered onto the set. Barbie swerved like a pro. I tipped my hat.”

He also had to contend with skeptical locals:

“One guy yelled, ‘Real Texans don’t drive pink spaceships!’ So I challenged him to a drag race. He lost to Ken’s hover-scooter.”

Building a Crew from the Falls

Instead of importing a Hollywood team, Grit insisted on hiring locals:

  • Three high school students from the Wichita Auto Tech Club

  • His niece Cheryl, who installed the backup glitter fuel lines

  • A Vietnam vet who only listens to Reba and builds flawless hydraulic lifts

  • “Big Dan,” a cowboy-turned-e-bike enthusiast who now coordinates drone deliveries of Barbie smoothies

“These folks ain’t union, but they got heart — and they know how to apply rhinestones with surgical precision.”

Grit turned a decommissioned H-E-B truck depot into the Vehicle Command Center, complete with:

  • A fog machine named “Dolly”

  • A checklist board that says “Brakes, Bling, Battery, Beyoncé”

  • Coffee brewed strong enough to resurrect a plastic doll

What the Cast Thinks

Ryan Gosling once described Grit as “the only man I trust to keep Ken’s crotch cool mid-jump.” Margot Robbie brought him a custom pink wrench set.

“Sydney Sweeney cried when I gave her a glittered helmet. Said no one ever made her feel this safe before.”

Even Professor Dalrymple, Barbie’s in-house philosopher, consulted Grit for metaphorical interpretations of vehicle placement.

“She said, ‘Is the DreamCruiser a symbol of transcendence or repression?’ I said, ‘It’s got cruise control and a cup holder. That’s all I know.’”

Mars Ain’t Flat

Grit had to work closely with the special effects team to simulate Martian terrain in Texas. He brought in 80 tons of red-dyed sand and installed hidden ramps for stunts.

“We shot a scene where Barbie does a donut around a crater while Ken plays the keytar. I cried.”

One problem? The pink dust kept getting in the engines.

“Barbie’s hover-unit coughed glitter for three days. We called it the ‘Bedazzler’s Cough.’ I started wearin’ goggles just to read the speedometer.”

The Barbie Way Changed Him

Before the movie, Grit had never worn pink.

“Now I got three pink flannels, a magenta toolbox, and a glitter tattoo that says ‘YES SHE KEN.’ I think… I’m into this.”

He’s started referring to vehicles as “she” again, but now with a touch of existential awe.

“That cruiser don’t just purr. She questions you.”

His friends in Archer City were skeptical — until he drove the Glambulance into a tractor pull and won Best in Show.

“They respect Barbie now. Some of ‘em even asked for Mattel merch.”

What’s Next?

Grit’s considering opening a Barbie-themed garage called Pink Torque back in Archer City.

“We’ll specialize in feminist oil changes, identity-affirming alignment checks, and monthly glitter flushes.”

He’s also in talks to become a consultant for the next Fast & Furious, which may involve a crossover scene where Barbie drag races Dominic Toretto on Venus.

“I told them I’m in if I can bring Cheryl and the fog machine.”

Final Words

As the sun sets on the Wichita Falls soundstage, Ray “Grit” Melville wipes pink sand off a chrome bumper and leans against Barbie’s DreamCruiser.

“People thought I was just some mechanic. But I got to be the man who helped Barbie get where she needed to go. That means somethin’.”

He tips his sequined cowboy hat, kicks the hover-unit into idle, and adds:

“She drives the future. I just put the wheels on it.”
